Previously, the net-metering scheme for solar panels made a home battery financially unattractive, but with the possible abolition of this scheme and the additional costs for households with solar panels, interest in home batteries is increasing.
Energy suppliers such as Eneco and NextEnergy are introducing a new option where home batteries can be used to balance the power grid, making money. With dynamic energy tariffs, batteries can be charged when the price is low and supply power back when the price is high, creating a new revenue model!
In addition, households can get VAT refund for the purchase and installation of home batteries if they register and use the battery for trading electricity. VAT refund for home batteries is subject to certain conditions, such as having an energy management system and an energy contract in the entrepreneur’s name.
At EAB Excellent, we have developed an Energy Monitoring System (EMS) like this within our platform ‘EAB Digital’. With this EMS, you can accurately measure, analyse and optimise your consumption. Want to know more? Then check out our page on EMS.
Small business allowance (KOR) scheme
Small business owners participating in the KOR are exempt from VAT and therefore cannot reclaim it. If they want to buy a home battery after obtaining VAT refund for solar panels, they must first opt out of the KOR. This requires them to file quarterly VAT returns from now on and they cannot participate in the KOR again for three years.
